NATO Defense College Foundation in Rome. 9 December 2019
Rome, Italy: After the mutations of Al Qaeda and the weakening of the Islamic State, there is an emergence of a third generation of terrorist threats. The Confronting Criminal/Terrorist Threats Conference discussed the shifting nature and strategy of the global jihadist movement and non-state actors along with the impact that this threat may have on NATO’s allies and partners.
NATO Defense College Foundation (NDCF) holds periodic conferences on challenges and security issues for the Alliance. Leander-J actively coordinated with NDCF and other entities present at the conference, including the director of the NATO Hub for the South. During the course of the conference, participants engaged the jihadist groups who rely heavily on media and virtual dimensions for propaganda, communication and logistics.
It is expected NATO may have a larger role confronting criminal/terrorist threats including capacity building to counter terrorist threats and in human security, particularly the protection of civilians, especially children, and in the support for de-radicalization programs based on development and social integration principles.
